Ingredients
Scale
For the Dough:
- 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast (one packet)
- ½ tsp salt
- ¾ cup warm milk (110°F)
- ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 egg
For the Cinnamon Filling:
- ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
- ¾ cup brown sugar
- 1 tbsp cinnamon
For the Matcha Glaze:
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 1 tsp matcha powder
- 2 tbsp milk (or more for consistency)
- ½ tsp vanilla extract
Instructions
- Activate the Yeast: Mix the warm milk, yeast, and a pinch of sugar in a small bowl. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until the mixture becomes foamy, indicating the yeast is active and ready to use.
- Make the Dough: In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, and salt. Add the activated yeast mixture, melted butter, and egg. Mix thoroughly until the ingredients form a cohesive dough.
- Knead & Rise: Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 8-10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a cloth, and let it rise in a warm spot until doubled in size, approximately 1 hour.
- Roll & Fill: Roll the dough out into a large rectangle. Spread the softened butter evenly over the surface, then sprinkle the brown sugar and cinnamon mixture on top. Roll the dough tightly from one end to the other to form a log.
- Slice & Bake: Cut the cinnamon roll log into 12 equal slices using a sharp knife or floss. Arrange the slices in a greased 9×13 baking dish. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 18-22 minutes, or until the rolls turn golden brown but remain soft.
- Make the Matcha Glaze: Whisk together the powdered sugar, matcha powder, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth and free of clumps. Adjust the milk quantity as needed to achieve a drizzle-able consistency.
- Glaze & Serve: Drizzle the matcha glaze over the warm cinnamon rolls just before serving to enjoy the perfect balance of sweetness and earthiness.
Notes
- Warm the milk to about 110°F to activate the yeast effectively without killing it.
- Use softened butter for the filling to avoid leakage and ensure smooth spreading.
- Place the dough in a warm spot to rise faster, especially if your kitchen is cool.
- Do not overbake; cinnamon rolls should be soft and tender, not dry.
- Sift the matcha powder before mixing to prevent clumps in the glaze.
- For dairy-free options, substitute almond milk and vegan butter.
- You can refrigerate the rolled and sliced dough overnight for fresh morning baking or freeze the baked rolls for later use.
