  • Total Time: 30 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Description

This Crispy Sweet Chilli Beef recipe combines tender beef strips coated in cornflour and fried to golden perfection, then tossed in a luscious sweet chilli sauce infused with garlic, ginger, chili, and spring onions. Garnished with fresh coriander and sesame seeds, it makes for a flavorful and satisfying dish perfect for weeknight dinners or entertaining guests.

Ingredients

Scale

Beef and Coating

  • 500g beef strips (thinly sliced)
  • 3 tablespoons cornflour
  • Vegetable oil (for frying, about 4 tablespoons total)

Sauce and Aromatics

  • 1 small red chili, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon ginger, minced
  • 4 spring onions, sliced (separate white and green parts)
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons sweet chili sauce
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil

Garnish

  • Fresh coriander, chopped
  • Sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. Coat the beef: Toss the thinly sliced beef strips with cornflour in a bowl, ensuring every piece is evenly coated. Set aside to allow the coating to adhere properly.
  2. Fry the beef: Heat a generous amount of vegetable oil in a wok or large frying pan over medium-high heat. Fry the beef in batches to avoid overcrowding, cooking each batch for about 3-4 minutes until golden and crispy. Remove cooked beef with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  3. Sauté aromatics: Pour off excess oil from the pan, leaving about 2 tablespoons. Return the pan to medium-high heat and add the white parts of the spring onions, minced garlic, minced ginger, and finely chopped red chili. Stir-fry briefly for about 1 minute until fragrant.
  4. Make the sauce: Add soy sauce, sweet chili sauce, honey, rice vinegar, and sesame oil to the pan. Stir well and cook for approximately 2 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly and becomes glossy.
  5. Toss beef in sauce: Return the crispy beef strips to the pan and toss thoroughly to coat all pieces evenly with the sticky sweet chili sauce.
  6. Garnish and serve: Remove from heat, then sprinkle the dish with the green parts of the spring onions, fresh coriander, and sesame seeds. Serve immediately while hot and crispy.

Notes

  • For extra heat, add more red chili or a pinch of chili flakes in the sauce.
  • Ensure not to overcrowd the pan while frying beef to maintain crispiness.
  • Use fresh beef strips or slice your own from a good quality cut for best texture.
  • The sauce can be adjusted in sweetness or tang by adding more honey or rice vinegar according to taste.
  • Serve with steamed jasmine rice or noodles for a complete meal.
