Description

Classic Chocolate Chip Cookies are a timeless treat featuring a perfect balance of crisp edges and chewy centers, loaded with rich chocolate chips. These cookies are easy to make and ideal for any occasion, whether a casual snack or a festive gathering.

Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour (weighed in grams or spooned and leveled)
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ¼ teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter (room temperature)
  • 1½ cup light brown sugar (packed)
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs (room temperature)
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract

Mix-ins & Topping

  • 2¼ cups chocolate chips and/or chunks
  • 2 tablespoons coarse salt (optional, for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheet(s) with parchment paper which helps with easier cleanup and prevents sticking.
  2. Prepare dry ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Set this mixture aside to be added later.
  3. Cream butter and sugars: In a large mixing bowl, beat the room temperature unsalted butter with light brown sugar and granulated sugar on medium speed for about 2 minutes until the mixture is smooth and fluffy. Scrape down the sides of the bowl to ensure even mixing.
  4. Add eggs and vanilla: Add the eggs one at a time to the creamed mixture, mixing thoroughly after each addition. Then add the vanilla extract and mix well to combine all wet ingredients evenly.
  5. Combine dry and wet ingredients: Gradually add the flour mixture to the wet ingredients. Mix carefully and just until the flour is incorporated to avoid overmixing which can make cookies tough.
  6. Fold in chocolate chips: Gently fold in the chocolate chips or chunks with a spatula to distribute them evenly throughout the dough.
  7. Scoop the dough: Use a cookie scoop or spoon to form balls of dough and place them on the prepared baking sheets spaced at least 2 inches apart. Optionally, sprinkle additional mini chocolate chips on top of each dough ball for extra chocolate goodness.
  8. Bake the cookies: Bake in the preheated oven for 10 to 14 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden but the centers remain soft. Remove from oven promptly to prevent overbaking.
  9. Add finishing salt and cool: While still warm, sprinkle coarse salt over the tops of the cookies if desired. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a cooling rack to cool completely. Enjoy your classic chocolate chip cookies!

Notes

  • For best results, use room temperature ingredients to ensure proper mixing and consistency.
  • You can substitute half of the all-purpose flour with whole wheat flour for a nuttier flavor and added fiber.
  • Adjust baking time slightly based on your cookie size and oven variance; smaller cookies will bake faster.
  • Adding coarse salt on top enhances the chocolate flavor and balances the sweetness.
  • Store cookies in an airtight container to keep them fresh for up to one week.
  • Freezing cookie dough balls before baking can help develop deeper flavors and make baking more convenient.
