Ingredients
Scale
Dry Ingredients
- 3 cups all-purpose flour (weighed in grams or spooned and leveled)
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- ¼ teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
Wet Ingredients
- 1 cup unsalted butter (room temperature)
- 1½ cup light brown sugar (packed)
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs (room temperature)
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
Mix-ins & Topping
- 2¼ cups chocolate chips and/or chunks
- 2 tablespoons coarse salt (optional, for topping)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheet(s) with parchment paper which helps with easier cleanup and prevents sticking.
- Prepare dry ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Set this mixture aside to be added later.
- Cream butter and sugars: In a large mixing bowl, beat the room temperature unsalted butter with light brown sugar and granulated sugar on medium speed for about 2 minutes until the mixture is smooth and fluffy. Scrape down the sides of the bowl to ensure even mixing.
- Add eggs and vanilla: Add the eggs one at a time to the creamed mixture, mixing thoroughly after each addition. Then add the vanilla extract and mix well to combine all wet ingredients evenly.
- Combine dry and wet ingredients: Gradually add the flour mixture to the wet ingredients. Mix carefully and just until the flour is incorporated to avoid overmixing which can make cookies tough.
- Fold in chocolate chips: Gently fold in the chocolate chips or chunks with a spatula to distribute them evenly throughout the dough.
- Scoop the dough: Use a cookie scoop or spoon to form balls of dough and place them on the prepared baking sheets spaced at least 2 inches apart. Optionally, sprinkle additional mini chocolate chips on top of each dough ball for extra chocolate goodness.
- Bake the cookies: Bake in the preheated oven for 10 to 14 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden but the centers remain soft. Remove from oven promptly to prevent overbaking.
- Add finishing salt and cool: While still warm, sprinkle coarse salt over the tops of the cookies if desired. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a cooling rack to cool completely. Enjoy your classic chocolate chip cookies!
Notes
- For best results, use room temperature ingredients to ensure proper mixing and consistency.
- You can substitute half of the all-purpose flour with whole wheat flour for a nuttier flavor and added fiber.
- Adjust baking time slightly based on your cookie size and oven variance; smaller cookies will bake faster.
- Adding coarse salt on top enhances the chocolate flavor and balances the sweetness.
- Store cookies in an airtight container to keep them fresh for up to one week.
- Freezing cookie dough balls before baking can help develop deeper flavors and make baking more convenient.
