Ingredients
Cinnamon Rolls
- 16 refrigerated cinnamon rolls (icing reserved)
Apple Mixture
- 4 medium apples (peeled, cored, thinly sliced)
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 2 tablespoons packed brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 0.5 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
Toppings
- 1 cup cream cheese frosting
- 0.5 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare Dish: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish thoroughly to prevent sticking.
- Sauté Apples: In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the sliced apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Cook for 5-7 minutes until the apples are tender and coated with the spiced sugar mixture.
- Layer First Half: Flatten half of the cinnamon rolls into discs using your hands or a rolling pin, then layer them evenly in the prepared baking dish. Spoon half of the sautéed apple mixture over the cinnamon discs and drizzle with some cream cheese frosting.
- Layer Second Half: Repeat the process by layering the remaining flattened cinnamon rolls, the rest of the apple mixture, and additional cream cheese frosting over the top.
- Bake: Place the casserole in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes until the top is golden brown and the layers are cooked through.
- Finish and Serve: Remove from the oven, spread any remaining frosting on top, and sprinkle with chopped nuts if desired. Allow the dish to cool slightly before serving to set the layers.
Notes
- For added texture and flavor, use chopped pecans or walnuts as a topping.
- Make sure to sauté apples until just tender to maintain a slight bite that balances the soft cinnamon rolls.
- If you prefer less sweetness, reduce the amount of brown sugar used in the apple mixture.
- Use refrigerated cinnamon rolls with icing included to simplify preparation.
- Let the dessert cool a bit before cutting to ensure clean slices.
