Description

This Chicken Crescent Roll Casserole combines tender cooked chicken, creamy cheese filling, and flaky crescent rolls baked to golden perfection. A comforting and savory dish perfect for family dinners or potlucks, featuring a rich cream of chicken sauce and layers of cheddar cheese.

Ingredients

Scale

Crescent Rolls and Sauce

  • 2 (8 oz) cans Pillsbury Refrigerated Crescent Dinner Rolls
  • 1 (10 3/4 oz) can cream of chicken soup, undiluted
  • 3/4 cup grated cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream

Filling

  • 4 oz cream cheese, room temperature
  • 4 tbsp butter, room temperature
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/3 cup onion, finely chopped
  • 2 large cooked chicken breasts, finely chopped (about 2 cups)
  • 1/2 cup finely grated cheddar cheese (for filling)
  • 1/2 tsp seasoning salt
  • 1/2 tsp ground black pepper
  • 24 tbsp heavy whipping cream

Topping

  • 12 cups grated cheddar cheese (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat and prep: Preheat oven to 350ºF. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter to prevent sticking and help with browning.
  2. Prepare the sauce: In a small pot over medium heat, mix together the cream of chicken soup, ¾ cup grated cheddar cheese, and ½ cup heavy whipping cream. Stir frequently until the cheese melts and the sauce is smooth. Remove from heat and set aside.
  3. Make the filling: In a mixing bowl, combine the room temperature cream cheese, butter, and garlic powder using a fork until evenly blended. Add the finely chopped cooked chicken, chopped onions, 2-4 tablespoons heavy whipping cream, seasoning salt, black pepper, and ½ cup finely grated cheddar cheese. Mix thoroughly until the filling is creamy and well combined.
  4. Assemble crescents: Unroll the crescent rolls. Place approximately 1 tablespoon of the chicken mixture on the larger end of each crescent triangle. Roll up the dough starting at the larger end to encase the filling.
  5. Layer the casserole: Spread some of the prepared cream of chicken sauce on the bottom of the greased baking dish. Arrange the filled crescent rolls seam side down in a single layer over the sauce.
  6. Add sauce and cheese topping: Pour the remaining cream of chicken sauce evenly over the crescent rolls. Sprinkle generously with 1-2 cups grated cheddar cheese.
  7. Bake: Place the casserole in the preheated oven and bake for 30 minutes or until the crescent rolls are golden brown, the cheese is bubbly, and the filling is heated through.

Notes

  • For best results, use room temperature cream cheese and butter to ensure a smooth filling.
  • You can substitute cooked turkey for chicken if desired.
  • If you prefer a spicier kick, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or chili flakes to the filling.
  • Allow the casserole to cool for a few minutes after baking for easier slicing and serving.
  • This casserole can be prepared ahead and refrigerated, then baked when ready.
